Notable news from the art world π¦β¨
π Starting with the Olympic Games, who knew there is also an Olympic Museum? Seven Olympians are now exhibiting their artworks inspired by sport and the Olympic values as part of the Olympian Artists Programme in Paris. You can check it up here.
π On that train, Art Basel created a list with seven (that magic number again) current exhibitions to visit in Paris during the Olympics. Some great ones include Clotilde JimΓ©nez show titled βThe Long Runβ at Mariane Ibrahim and at the Fondation Louis Vuitton βThe Collection: A Sports Meetingβ. You see the list with the shows here.
π Lastly, on a sensitive topic about Nazi looted art, Tom Mashberg wrote an article on The New York Times about a recently returned artwork by the heirs of Ernst and Helene Papanek; a Jewish couple who fled the Nazis and unknowingly bought an Egon Schiele drawing, to its rightful owners - doing the right thing. Also, he spotlighted the Art Institute of Chicago as it is contesting the return of another Schiele piece, "Russian War Prisoner."
On that note, in my interview with C. Raman Schlemmer about the legacy of his grandfather and Bauhaus Master Oskar Schlemmer, Raman told the murky story of MoMAβs collection that includes the iconic βBauhaus Stairway(Bauhaustreppe)β, painted in 1932 by his grandfather - he stated many times that the painting in MoMAβs collection was never paid for to the artist.
Although it was exhibited together with almost 50 other works that Schlemmer sent to New York with the hope that these works will survive the Nazi confiscation and that the group show 'Bauhaus: 1919-1928' (opened December 7, 1938 until January 30, 1939) would help him and his young family to migrate and escape Germany.
In the right image you can see the painting exhibited at the museum in 1939 and in a recent article in the Gagosian Quarterly that references the Bauhaus Stairway Mural (a painting by Lichtenstein which is based on Schlemmerβs painting) it writes βBauhaus Stairway was gifted by Philip Johnson in 1942 to MoMAβ - go figure.
π Rise and Shine: the crypto space
π The 2024 Bitcoin Conference in Nashville
by
The 2024 Bitcoin Conference in Nashville just turned into a crypto-political carnival, with none other than Donald Trump stealing the show. In a plot twist, the former Bitcoin skeptic-in-chief has gone full crypto-convert, promising to HODL the government's Bitcoin stash (confiscated BTC) if he gets back into the Oval Office. Talk about a bull run in political opinions!
While Trump was busy doing his best impression of a Bitcoin maximalist, and was promising to fire Gary Gensler on day one (the crowd roared!) - other political heavy-hitters were trying to outdo each other with their crypto promises. Robert F. Kennedy Jr. went all-in with a jaw-dropping 4 million Bitcoin reserve proposal, while Senator Cynthia Lummis wasn't far behind, pushing for a cool million BTC in Uncle Sam's piggy bank.
The GOP is now cozying up to crypto faster than you can say "blockchain," with Trump raking in millions in digital donations ($21M to be exact). Not to be left holding an empty hardware wallet, the Dems are scrambling to get a piece of the crypto pie too.
Who would've thought that Bitcoin would become the hottest political accessory of 2024? It's like watching a high-stakes poker game, but instead of chips, they're playing with cryptocurrencies and voter sentiment. Grab your popcorn (or should we say, your hardware wallets?) β this election cycle is going to be a wild ride on the crypto rollercoaster!
π Back to Gary Genser: Cozomo deβ Medici teamed up with UNFK on a meme contest, with a $10k prize. They ask you to give the middle finger to Gary Gensler - for real. The winning memes will be exhibited outside his office. Submission ends on August 2nd. See more here:
