🍎🐍 Art As A Consequence #12
🌐 Let's talk: BTC Halving, Runes, an exclusive interview for HR Giger's upcoming 10 year death anniversary, and around the art world.
Welcome to the twelfth edition of the ART AS A CONSEQUENCE weekly briefing. As we approach the 10th anniversary of H.R. Giger's passing (May 12th, 2024), I would like to share my recent conversation with the his wife, Carmen Giger, reflecting on his enduring legacy. Additionally this week we survived: the opening of Venice Biennale, Coachella, Bitcoin Halving and 420.
Back in January and on the ART AS A CONSEQUENCE #2 weekly briefing, I had spotted Hans Ulrich Obrist with the Larva Labs founders on the newly launched punks hub, the episode was finally released this week - so grab a snack 🍎 and happy scrolling.

Notable news from the art world 🦋✨

🍎 American artist Faith Ringgold passed away at the age of 93. Best known for her storytelling quilts, Ringgold was celebrated for creating powerful visual narratives that challenge societal norms and celebrate African American culture and history.
🍎 Why Are Art Resale Prices Plummeting? Andrew Russeth and Katya Kazakina discuss the state of the market in their recent podcast on artnet. Many would say it is a good time to buy art, for example a painting by Dan Colen that was once bought a decade ago for around $450,000 went for $15,000 at auction.
🍎 The Venice Biennale opened, what else is happening outside the pavilions? Here’s what I will be visiting in a few week:
🍎 Hans Ulrich Obrist was the last guest to appear at “13_Punks As Told by CryptoPunks: HUP & Larva Labs”
"We were looking for a solution, we were really interested in digital collectibles, but we just didn't feel like that could be strong enough, you know? If you just had an app, for example, if we had made an app and that app allowed you to own something, and you could, do all the trading and everything, but just the app told you what you own, that just didn't feel it enough. And so we had even put the whole idea on hold for a while until, until Ethereum came."

H.R. Giger's Legacy
A Conversation with Carmen Giger
“Some people would say my paintings show a future world and maybe they do, but I paint from reality. I put several things and ideas together, and perhaps, when I have finished, it could show the future.”
—H.R. Giger
As we approach the 10th anniversary of H.R. Giger's passing (May 12th, 2024), I would like to share my latest conversation with the his wife, Carmen Giger, reflecting on his enduring legacy.
Hans Ruedi Giger (1940-2014), or HR Giger, was a groundbreaking artist whose surreal style with the airbrush amazed many, even mistaken for photographs by customs once. Salvador Dalí was intrigued by Giger's work, which inspired the biomechanical world.
Giger went on to win an Oscar Academy Award for the visual design of Ridley Scott's 1979 sci-fi horror film Alien. However, his influence extends far beyond the realms of art and film.
H.R. Giger's aesthetic has left an indelible mark on popular culture, inspiring countless artists, designers, and filmmakers across various media. From video games to fashion, his legacy continues to captivate and inspire audiences globally.

🍎 The Runes protocol is a new innovation in the Bitcoin ecosystem, which debuted at block 840,000, coinciding with Bitcoin's recent halving event. Crafted by Bitcoin developer Casey Rodarmor, who is also behind the Ordinals protocol, Runes introduces a token standard for creating fungible tokens directly on Bitcoin (without clogging the network, which was the case with previous standards).
The debut of Runes is set to enrich the Bitcoin space by providing a straightforward, efficient mechanism for issuing fungible tokens such as security tokens, stablecoins, and governance tokens. This is expected to attract more users to Bitcoin, generate additional revenue through increased transaction fees, spur innovation, and establish an effective method for the direct issuance of fungible tokens on Bitcoin.
The Runes protocol ultimately has a broader vision for enhancing Bitcoin's functionality and accessibility, marking a significant step forward in the blockchain's evolution.
